Memorial Church Armenian Genozid, Deir az-Zor
Memorial Church Armenian Genozid in Deir az-Zor gravely damaged by shelling and fightings in the town at the banks of Euphrates river. The church is an important site to remember the 1915´s genozid committed by Ottoman turks which killed about 1 million armenians who were deported through the desert to Deir az-Zor were the cast majority died in detentions camps. It is said the curch was shelled by pro-Assad forces in december or January 2013. A granate or rocket explosion in the courtyard broke through the concrete basement and destroey the library located in the basement. Original exhibit samples like bottles filled with ashes of armenian victions and bones where destroyed at least by the blast. All details on events causing the demage remain unconfirmed.
