During the secession wars in Abkhazia and South Ossetia in the early 1990s and again in 2008 240.000 ethnical georgians were expelled. The group of internally displaced persons (IDP) makes a total 6 percent of the georgian population.
Since 25 years a quarter of a million uprooted georgians aren´t able to resettle at their former homesteads. Return is impossible as the conflicts are still not solved at all. A second generation born after the war raise in rotten former soviet sanatoriums or in newly built IDP-settlements across the beautiful mountainous country of Georgia.
For elderly the term "home" serves an anchor into memories of a former better life and empowers them to survive in the recent environment they are living in since many years. Even all IDP are georgian nationals, most of them never arrived emotionally at their new destination in Georgia. Their reality doesen´t feel to them as being at home. They still feel strange in their own country.
